| Applying
To CIS:
Students applying for admission may do so during their 8th grade or 9th grader years. Magnet Applications may be obtained from the web at http://schoolchoice.ocps.net or by contacting the School Choice Office at 407-317-3200. Acceptance into the Magnet is determined by the School Choice Office, not Dr. Phillips High School.
Before applying, interested students must understand the academic rigor of the CIS magnet. Students are expected to maintain the following CIS requirements or be returned to their home school:
*A 3.0 unweighted GPA each semester
"*A good conduct record with no Level II, III or IV disciplinary actions
"*Attend a minimum of two CIS evening events each year, including international dinners and culture nights
"*Complete a "practicum" by the end of your junior year. The practicum is an extensive, hands-on international experience, which may be fulfilled by hosting a foreign student for a week, videoconferencing with a foreign school, interning with an international business, maintaining a pen-pal or e-pal correspondence, traveling abroad, or completing a similar activity.
Ask yourself these questions before you apply:
Can I maintain a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA in challenging, college-oriented classes?
*Do I possess good conduct and attendance records?
*Do I possess strong reading skills, study skills, and a desire to learn?
*Do I like to read?
*Do I have the will and stamina to succeed in Advanced Placement (AP) classes, which are taught at a level similar to college classes? (The very first year, as freshmen, all CIS students take AP Human Geography, and each year after, they take more AP classes.)
*Am I interested in learning about the world and its history, in acquiring another language, and in studying current events?
*Do the required courses indicated under "Curriculum Requirements" appeal to me?
If you answered "yes" to all of the above questions, we encourage you to apply. If you answered "no" to any of the questions, there is probably another program more suited to your needs and interests.
